The most powerful choice I made this year was cutting ties with my family. After years of abuse and being told that I would never amount to anything, I realized I could no longer keep carrying their voices inside me. It wasn’t an easy decision,it was scary, painful, and left me feeling like I no longer had a “built-in” support system. But at the same time, it gave me the chance to start healthier, stronger, and truly supportive of who I am becoming.
With that choice came another: I finally picked a major that I wanted, not one my family told me I “had to” pursue. For the first time, I felt free to chase something that excites me and aligns with my own goals instead of living under someone else’s expectations.
What I’ve learned is that letting go of toxic ties isn’t weakness, it’s strength. It takes courage to you, but don’t know how. It takes even more courage to bet on yourself when others have doubted you for so long. Though I no longer have the same family support, the people who do stand by me now are genuine, uplifting, and more powerful than I could have imagined.
This choice taught me that sometimes the most important step forward is also the hardest one, but it’s the one that allows you to finally grow.
