I have been in Pathways to Independence for 3 years, since August of 2021. I have heard about pathways from my friend and former client who was adamant that I apply!
I think the most beneficial was the budget workshop and the stress management workshop, but the auto workshop was an unexpected help due to my owning an older car that needed more maintenance and TLC.
The budget workshop really allowed me to understand where my money was going, and how to identify ways to save. One of the best programs they offer is “save a penny” which allows for matching of savings every month, and this has been something I’ve told EVERY new client about as a great way to save without having to worry about it!.
I have successfully entered a new Nursing program with CSUSB and GWC, of which I am incredibly proud and I couldn’t have done it without the involvement of pathways and their educational advisory team. My mentor has always been a positive support and she keeps me focused on my long term goal of becoming a nurse when things get tough (and nursing school is one of the toughest programs in my opinion).
I plan to get my BSN and work in the community as well as possibly get my SANE nursing certification, which would allow me to provide medical care and forensic skills in cases of sexual assault. As a victim of sexual assault I want to give comfort and care to those who need it most. I care a great deal about the Pathways clients who have experienced partner violence and familial violence and this is something I’d like to pursue professionally upon graduating. I plan to mentor other clients someday and give them something to look forward to when school–and life–gets tough. I want to give back as much as possible, since I wouldn’t be here without the help of Pathways to Independence.
